The first phase of Sound Communities was funded by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation and John Lyon's Charity, and was an extension of our Music for Change programme. The project aimed to build four communities of practice every year 2018-2021 in parts of London, Luton, Essex and East Sussex, developing understanding and practice in early childhood music and communication. In each location, groups of 6-10 Nursery teachers meet every month. The project offered both monthly CPD, sharing and reflection sessions as well as visits by Creative Futures music practitioners to participating settings.

We have also created a Sound Communities online resource for Early Years professionals and music leaders in partnership with The Communication Trust, which was launched in January 2020.

The current phase of Sound Communities is taking place in the London Borough of Brent funded by Youth Music and John Lyon's Charity from 2022-2025.
Here we share some mini videos of key concepts that we've created to spark conversation between our face to face sessions.
What is Sound Communities?
Watch our short video explaining more about the project, and hear directly from some of the Early Years practitioners who have already taken part and observed the impact it's had on children in their settings.
